Girl Fight Not
This is the first time since 1994 that we have not blessed the Villa monthly with pre-Soul Capoeira Angola classes for urban kids,  and prayers to ensure healthy, safe and inspiring events. This weekend, in addition to helping build the scene, support the featured upcoming  Capoeira Angola Workshop Weekend Girl Fight Not!

Dear Soul,
First, during this season of tremendous change and, to some degree, implosion in our music scene, please allow us to express deep gratitude for your patience.

As an "Act of Activism", ever since 1987 with our first Bohemia party, we sought to create a great scene (not just great events) so that our kind could share in quality, prime night-of-week, and prime location events that celebrate our culture.  This goes beyond fancy promotions, slick venues, and gimmicks, but instead requires a deep-rooted understanding of the business, social, cultural and social justice needs of the people. It even asks us to decide what we stand for, our individual or collective success. We celebrate Chip for his similar work with Greatest Minds.

Last month, you showed incredible support and patience as we set out to throw two huge events on back-to-back weekends: Wake Up the Earth had over 3000 people with DJ Mojavi spinning along live performers-Hip Hop with PeaceBoston and AMP, live AfroBeat with Lamine Toure, youth dance with La Pinata and so much more, followed by the 300 person afterparty youth dancers, Live show by Iyeoka and Rock By Funk, and DJs Mojavi, and K.C. Hallet.

Then we followed that with the crazy ambitious PUMA City project, a free-to-the-public phenomenon that no-one would have expected to take off the way it did.  Thousands of people attended over the 3 week run including the capacity audiences DJ Kon and Vuitton (with a legal 3AM afterparty) on the Friday, then the return of DJ Rich Medina (Jump n Funk) on the Saturday.  Of course, we had a ball however, many of us could not get in. As you know, it is always a challenge, when we do not have control over our facilities and staff, to create the proper environment/culture for our events. It has been our honor to receive all your comments, suggestions, and sometimes hard criticism over the years. It helps us collectively tackle this formidable challenge - creating an inspiring, sustainable, and equitable social scene in this town.

Thankfully, PUMA plans to offer another deep event, this time for Soul members only as a giveback. Feel free to make suggestions for this event at our FaceBook page or our members' FaceBook group

Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian Martial Dance and Music Ritual representing the fusion of African, Indigenous and Colonial cultures in slave-era Brazil. It can be credited for the self-development resilience and creative resistance necessary to create one of the greatest freedom movements for people of color in this hemisphere.

Here in the United States, Kilombo Novo sees Capoeira Angola and other indigenous art forms as our best hope in promoting spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being particularly given the increase in suicide, homicide and overall dread in our lives...for young and old and all ages.
